Large Piggery: Introduction to Lean

The Piggery needed to be treated more like a small to medium sized business than just a farm. The deployment of 5S had an immediate impact on their staff, with an improvement in housekeeping and hygiene standards. Visual management allowed them to easily measure performance on a daily basis.

By performing the 5S on an area, it peels back the excess in the area, and it exposes the waste. By doing this, the actual problems were easier to identify and then tackle. Prior to this, the farm had no system and were targeting what they thought was wrong, rather than what they knew was wrong. Removing clutter has aided in identifying specific issues and then finding their root cause. This will aid in further savings on the farm including easier adherence to standards, reduction of feed wastage, reduction in wasted labour looking for tools, implements, etc.
